Curious about the world of customary Māori instruments? This workshop is an introduction to taonga pūoro and an opportunity to get hands-on with an underappreciated aspect of Te Ao Māori. You’ll learn their stories and get a chance to play some of the taonga if you feel the call.

Te Oro is a multicultural hub, and this workshop welcomes adult participants and the many ways they may identify. This is a safe and supportive place to explore the world of taonga pūoro, give it a go and bring te oro to Te Oro.

Mikaere Berryman-Kamp (Te Puku o Te Ika, Pākehā) is a maker, player and researcher of taonga pūoro, customary Māori instruments. As a descendant of Tūtānekai taonga pūoro runs in his blood and he is motivated to bring this practice back into the day to day and to his people. He has been fortunate to be mentored by many throughout the motu and acknowledges those who have helped him to where he is today. Mikaere is a proud member of Tāmaki Oro Rau, a taonga pūoro collective for like-minded practitioners based in the wider Auckland area.

As the current visual artist in residence at Te Oro, Mikaere is exploring the name of the building and the sonic histories of Ukutoia (Glen Innes) through object and sound.
